Belle Isle Conservancy Updates

March 17, 2020

As part of our commitment to support the efforts put in place to mitigate the impacts of Covid 19, Belle Isle Conservancy offices will be closed indefinitely. During this time, our team is working remotely to ensure that our mission-focused work is conducted, while at the same time remaining in compliance with best practices established by leading agencies. We urge you to adhere to the guidelines that have been put in place nationally and locally to best ensure that we work together to stop the spread of this virus. We will continue to update our website and social media accounts as new developments related to Belle Isle are announced.  Here are some additional updates:

  • You may still call the BIC office and contact our staff. Please reference this staff directory for contact information or call (313) 331-7760 to leave a message.

  • Belle Isle Aquarium will remain closed along with the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory through April 13th as mandated by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (MDNR).  Our Aquarium staff will continue to manage the well being of the animals on a daily basis. Because of the uncertain nature of the current situation, we thank you for understanding that this date could change.

  • All volunteer shifts are canceled until further notice. Contact Aly Melnik at melnika@belleisleconservancy.org for information related to Volunteer Services.

  • Field trips and tours are suspended due to the closure of the Belle Isle Aquarium and Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory. We will responsibly revisit these programs once the MDNR informs us about reopening the facilities.

  • Belle Isle Aquarium private rentals, for groups of any size, are suspended until further notice. Contact biarentals@belleisleconservancy.org with any questions.

  • The MDNR will continue to accommodate any scheduled private rentals at the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory that are 50 people or less. This policy could change as the virus advances. You can track facility closure updates via the MDNR website, and contact the MDNR Belle Isle Events office at DNR-belleisleparkevents@michigan.gov or (313) 821-9851.

  • At this time, planning will continue for upcoming Belle Isle Conservancy events, including the Belle Isle Conservancy Koi Festival (May 3rd), the PwC Grand Prixmiere presented by Chevrolet (May 29th), and Deeper Dive (June 26th). We will monitor new Covid-19 developments daily and will follow any instructions declared by national and local authorities.

  • The Detroit River Binational Coalition is monitoring the sweeping magnitude of the virus and will provide Great Global Cleanup: Detroit River (April 25th) updates via the Great Global Cleanup website and its social media channels. Visit www.greatglobalcleanupdetroiriver.org for more information.

BIC leadership is staying on top of COVID-19 developments, and our team remains committed to being mission-focused as the global community continues to adjust to the effects of the virus. It is important for us to do what we can to keep the community safe as we support one another, and support you during this unusual time. Thank you and be well,
