COLLECTION

The Belle Isle Aquarium totes one of the largest collection of primitive air-breathing fish. Air breathing fish currently on display include: African Lung Fish, all seven species of Gar, South American Lung Fish, Electric Eel, Giant Gourami, Clown Knife Fish, Polypterus, and more.
This is the only known collection of all seven species of gar on display in North America.
Electric eels are capable of generating powerful electric shocks of up to 600 volts, which they use for hunting, self-defense, and communicating with fellow eels.

In addition to air breathing fish, Belle Isle also on display North American Great Lake native fish, African
Great Lakes Cichlids, Amazon River fish, Coral Reef fish, Blue Tang and Clown Fish (popularized
by Disney's Finding Nemo franchise), Seahorses, Sea Stars, Mbu Puffer fish, Alligator Snapping turtle
and others. Our collection is constantly being updated and changing. To keep up to date on new
displays follow us on Instagram @belleisleaquairum.
